Guys, can u all show more commitment towards this band comp?
I think this comp will really decide the future directions of the band, whether it'll keep the standard, or go downslope.
I hope each and everyone can keep this 3 Practices in mind.
1st- Individual practice
Nothing can be done efficiently if each of u can't play ur notes well. Eg today the ww had to go thru the repeated semiquavers becuz there r some who can't get the notes rite, or rush a little making the ensemble sound not together. Yes, others might find it boring but tats the only way to train running notes for ww.
2nd- Sectional practice
Even after u have done ur own individual practice, u still have to blend with others around u, esp ur own section n part (Eg, 2nd clar, 3rd tpt etc.) in terms of sound, intonation, dynamics. Its never abt solo playing. If u wana be solo then maybe consider joining the Singapore Youth Orchestra.
3rd- Ensemble practice
That means playing together as an ensemble n when u have parts which r similar to another section, try and blend in with each other. If possible, find extra time outside band or during breaks to work things out. I think u can also call it some sort of inter-sectionals, where 2 sections work together.
Lastly, I wana say open ur ears guys. Listening to others while u r playing will have a great effect on the overall ensemble sound. U'll find urself more sensitive to dynamics, intonation and balance. Eg, in Korea Folksong there's a trumpet solo, please dun drown him, all those playing the accompaniment.
I wun be there for the exchange tmr due to SAF Band work commitments, but all the best. Do a gd show in front of Orchid Park. All the best!
